Shogun: Total War Gold Edition PC Game Overview

ABOUT Shogun: Total War – Shogun: Total War is a real-time strategy game in which you play as a Daimyo, one of the warlords battling for the right to be called Shogun, ruler of a united Japan. The game is roughly split into two sections: a map-based planning stage and a 3D battle stage. The map stage is where you build buildings in the territories that you own, organize forces, plan campaigns and generally deal with the running of your conquests. You can also research new technologies and train troops here, so it is very important. When a conflict arises, you turn to the battle stage. Unlike almost all other real-time strategy games, Shogun’s battles take place on a 3D battlefield with realistic terrain.

ABOUT Shogun: Total War The Mongol Invasion – In this expansion for Shogun: Total War, incorporating the 1.12 patch, you get the chance to wage war based on the events in the Kamakura period in 13th century Japan. You either defend the country as a Daimyo against the barbarians at the gate or lead Kublai Khan’s Mongol hordes as they ravage the Japanese landscape. Playing as the invaders, you are not able to construct new buildings or train new units. Instead, you have to impress Kublai Khan by capturing territory to earn reinforcements. Along with the new campaign, the expansion pack includes new units, new buildings, three additional scenarios and extended multiplayer options.

I have the same problem yet my download is only 6gigs and I have a 5g download limit. I do in fact have a valid internet at 3g so I have all the requirments yet steam seems to be messsing us. I hate steam so much if I wanna play without updating I should be able to.

Actually I like Steam and it's a taste of the future. But I think Steam needs to rethink some of it's practices.
    1. Updates should be by choice not by rule.
    2. There should be more transparency of VAC. While I like the idea of a program that is on overwatch, looking for cheaters, I'm concerned about not only my privacy but the feeling that I'm just not allowed to mess with my game files.
    3. Steam makes me feel that i'm leasing the game from Valve and not actually owning the game.
There are quite a few concerns, but I do enjoy the benefits Steam brings (less boxes in my home, a compact place to make a purchase and from the comfort of my home no less). I have no intention of selling my games after use, so I'm not concerned about it's resale value. However, I'm not happy that i'm not given the choice to 'loan' my game to a friend to play. It's a product, I paid money for it, and therefore by my rights, i should be able to do whatever the heck i want with it. (i.e. i can't even make a coaster out of some duds i bought)

Dont get me wrong I used steam when it first came out and liked it. Though for huge games like this or fallout new vegas which I had same issues with but patch wasnt 6gigs. Its mant for games like counter-strike or something else moderately small. This is the 2nd time I installed a game from cd and had to install 1gig of a patch from the start and now I need to install 6gigs from the latest patch WTF. I heard it was only 64mb so why is it 6gigs for me? I wont be able to play shogun 2 total war now...this basically screwed me over now I lost the game I paid cash for.

I would rather pirate this game now or download a crack so I can play 'MY' GAME!!!

I have a very strong feeling that something important is deleted, changed or moved that Steam finds incredibly important to it's operation. I run AVG (not free), Spybot as well as defraggler and CCleaner by Piriform and AVG PC Tuneup. I think one of these programs did a change or is blocking something that Steam needs.
Which again (not to sound paranoid) makes me feel that that Steam Client isn't as friendly as ET, more Independence Day if you know what i mean.

you can setup this in your steam settings since ever

why you are editing them anyway

thats indeed the fact, you just buy a license and bind it to your account as you are not allowed to sell the license or sell or giveaway your account it is a kind of not owning it.

Okay. Explain how? I've checked the Settings dropdown and I'm not seeing any such choice.

And your system is certainly not an inch more virus free than mine and possibly does not even perform as well. Especially if all those programs are running constantly in the background. I don't mind using any of them for certain 'troubleshooting/maintenance' purposes - but running multiple security suites at once in background can cause very drastic problems...like missing files etc. ^^
Nonetheless, strange enough my Steam download was 64MB.
Btw. You can even run the STEAM client in offline mode as long as you dont play multiplayer.
But I agree it would be a very nice feature if one could select the patch version or build number within steam which someone wants to use/play. Sometimes, especially when it comes to modding, the auto-update is quite annoying .

Same problem, it's started downloading 15gb...
Would turning off automatic updates or something help?
  • edited April 2011
no it wont help @trollslayer i just cannot get the reason why it works for so many ppl and for some not.
anyway never experienced Steam to download a whole game instead just a patch, not even when using 'checking file cache'
@Iscaran find Shogun 2 in your library > right click > tab updates > automatic updates can be defined there for every game.
this is not SUGGESTED, you will not be able to play games with other players with different versions obviously.

    1. I'm fully aware that i can turn off auto update for each game.
    2. I bought the game, therefore I own it. If I wanted to edit the game and put the face of Boris the Bear on my daimyo, i have every right to do so.
    3. Again, I bought the game, therefore I own it.
I joined steam for it's benefits. I enjoy the ease of purchase and the lack of boxes. I also joined Steam for VAC because i'm sick and tired of online cheaters. With VAC i know that the chances of cheating is reduced (not eliminated). However, i'm uncomfortable with VAC not being transparent at times it's quite uncomfortable.

I suspect your theory is correct. I use CCleaner with no issues but I have Norton Internet Security 2009. It costs £15-20 and you still get the latest updates. A pretty inexpensive way of protecting your system. A lot of people bash Norton but I've always found it to be reliable and the 2009 version is far slicker than previous (and arguably subsequent) versions of the product.

I've used Steam for around seven years and have 47 games and have never experienced this issue. There is clearly something intefering with the Steam client for those experiencing these issues. Would be worth reinstalling disabling AV and other third-party tools to see if the issues persist. There's also the option of deleting the .blob file. Failing these, it probably warrants a full reinstall of the Steam client.
    1. I'm fully aware that i can turn off auto update for each game.
If this is the case, why were you protesting that Steam should rethink this aspect?

Ok you never actually tried using the settings have you? I have and im telling you that choosing not to update automatically doesnt do diddle squat. It will say the game isnt ready for offline play and most if not all the time it switches back to update auto everytime steams restarted making it impossible to stop AN update. Not like it matters. Steam is an abomination!

Actually, I HAVE used those settings, and have no trouble with operating offline. Where you can run into trouble with this is usually where you already have an OUTSTANDING update before the setting is changed. No way to avoid it then, as the system is aware there is an update it started preparing for before you changed the setting. If you still have a problem with this after having resolved the outstanding update, you need to either deleted the .blob file or reinstall Steam and eliminate or appropriately change the settings of your security and or firewall/router security settings.

I have had the same problem since I bought the game. I have reinstalled 3/4 times rang the sega help line the only suggestions I have had is to reinstall not acceptable.
The same problem 5 odd gigs to download. As I understand it the game is trying to reinstall by downloading itself. I bought the retail game so why it wants to download the game again is madness. This is not a one of problem there are enough people out there having the problems.
I would add my dx diag but it is 33 kb and exceeds the 19 kb limit

I had this option of not downloading any updates selected and it certainly doesnt update in the backround.
HOWEVER it appears steam makes you download major patches when you hit the play button whether you have this option on or not.

This may not be the case for all of you but take note of the speed the download is progressing sometimes it does it's own verification which looks like a full download but if that's a case you'll see the MBs completed climb much faster than you can normally download (albeit this is rare, and usually only happens when moving incomplete files back in to the game directory).
