Later on the player will come across Patches in the Tomb of the Giants, he will ask the player if they are a Cleric, if you say Yes, he will kick you down, if you say No, he will talk to you about treasure, and then kick you down anyway if you investigate the edge of the pit. Whatever the turn of events are, assuming Patches survives, he will then appear in the Firelink Shrine, on the way to the Graveyard, and he is now a Merchant, selling the player a number of useful items, weapons and armor.
