Hey guys, I just bought silent hunter III from steam. When I go to launch it it gives me that Error 'cannot initialize 3d engine'. I have Windows 7.I am really new.
Menus, sound, 3D, tutorials, missions. Gameplay: 10 minutes tested.
What does not
The installer crashes during the installation process.
The output is:

Workarounds
The installer error is not critical and can be ignored.

install the game using the command line:
Create a profile folder:

Insert the DVD-ROM, then open a terminal window:

From a web browser, download the latest patch file (v1.4b) for DVD: http://patches.ubi.com/silent_hunter_3/
In my case the file name is: 'silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.4b_emea.exe'
cd ~/Downloads # the folder where your downloaded files are write
wine silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.4b_emea.exe
At the end, select 'Never register'.
Check that the software has stop (look at the task manager of your OS).
The installer will display a dialog: 'you will have to restart your computer', click 'Yes': the installer will crash.

My problem...
So I bough my copy of SH3 from BestBuy in Stockton, CA. I can download old patches and they work just fine. I download 1.4 and I have the DLL file issue.
Check this out before getting to what I tried...
Keep this in mind while you read the rest of this post. I call support and I gave him the run down. His logical answer to my problem is I am the common problem of this message failing on around 15 computers. No I havent purchased 15 computers. I am an IT admin for a company and I have a small networking business on the side. So I have access to more than a few PCs in my work place and home/office/shop room. For piracy issues I feel i need to state that the loading of my copy of my game to 15 machines was done for testing purposes and removed when done since I first called in with this problem more than a year ago.
OK what I have tried...
Well I first go this message on a highly established machine, overclocked, 100 programs on it, this that and the other thing. Well bad machine to try a second test on. To skip a 50 chapter book here over time I have tried to use different machines, different XP discs as in OEM, factory restore cds, and even a technet trial version. The point was I was going for different builds. With the multiple builds I used mulpile machines. I just cannot get patch 4 to go any pc I try using my disc which is in perfect condition no scratches . I have vcerifiyed with support based on questions thay asked me that I do have the us version and not the international. I have had different results with the international patches. The results dont matter. I have the US disc multiple machines overtime US patch and it fails. Last I have got this error when:
installing the game upon hitting the deskytop for the first time with no updates 1 with SP2 1 with SP1a.
No programs with just updates and on fully established machines like a random users desk I stop at to try it when IM bored at work.
Support.....
I must be doing some thing wrong.
It works for everybody else.
Nobody else calls in for this exact problem.
I am the only common item in my description of my problem.
Just because I said I was an IT guy after he started talking to me like I was stupid he says,'My problem is I know it all' I mentioned to hoim that I am an IT guy when hje tried to tell me my error was from something I installed on my machine or some files that some program has altered. What a crock of ****. the error is comming right from the ubisoftSH3 folder in program files folder on a fresh install with no programs using an OEM XP SP1a disc and and HP/Compaq XP restore cd that I aquired almost 1.5 years apart from each other on 2 different pc(s) not over clocked or altered in a way.
I would appreciate any feeed back I could get as support says I am the common problem just because nobody has had this issue. Excuse me but I might be wrong but isnt this how a company finds out about glitches and errors that may have been over looked or had not come accross in any of there testing?
Last I stumbled upon an error in a piece of faxing hardware. I submitted an request for help they asked to login remotely to look they found something that didnt make since. That went back to RD in italy where it was manufactured. 7 months later I get a smal little card that said thank you for your input. the fix for this will go out in the next engine which will already be released by the time you get this.
